How to talk about gaps in your resume

Career gaps are more common than many people think. The key is explaining them clearly and confidently.

A gap on your resume is not automatically a problem. Employers are usually more interested in what happened during that period and what you learned from it.

Be honest

Do not try to hide employment gaps. Most interviewers will notice them anyway.

Keep the explanation simple

Whether you took time off for family, education, travel, health, or a job search, explain it directly without going into unnecessary detail.

Focus on what came next

Shift the conversation toward your current skills, experience, and readiness for the role.

The more comfortable you are discussing the gap, the less important it usually becomes during the interview.
